Nanotechnology is the study of manipulating matter on the molecular level at the nanoscale (1-100 nanometers), used in the fields of science, engineering, and technology and their varients.
Uses of Nanotechnology! Cosmetics:
Moisturizers, lotions hair-care products, make-up, and sunscreen
L’Oreal lotions and creams manipulate nanoparticles for "visible results"
Healing and repair of skin tissue
Prevent graying hair and hair loss
Antiperspirants--used to block odor and sweat in common deodorants/antiperspirants, such as Secret brand
New technology, still a minority in most facial and body creams or moisturizers
Sports: Nanotechnology is a huge use in sports today especially with equipment such as:
Wilson products such as tennis rackets are now twice as stable and twenty-two percent more powerful from the use of nanotubes, and Wilson also uses a nano‐composite to replace the titanium crown used on current golf clubs to lower the weight increasing the power of the hit.
Speed Cars where Nanotec-USA applied their Nano-Bionics treatment to the Nish Motor Sports’ speed car using fifty percent less than usual mixture of Nitro Methane fuel mixture, yet the cars managed to go a speed 37 miles per hour faster than their previous top speed.
Competitive swimwear such as the Speedo LZR Racer, which had been banned after the 2008 Olympics.
Nanotechnology allows scientists to create new, ultra-lightweight swimwear that needs to be approved by FINA to help swimmers glide through the water.
Tests have shown that the amount of water absorbed has been reduced to only two percent fabric weight rather than the fifty percent absorption in the previous materials used.
Medical
used in drug therapies or "smart drug", these drug therapies cause fewer side effects and more effective than traditional therapies
aid in formation of molecular systems
regeneration or replacement of body parts that are lost to infection, accident, or disease
employing nanoparticles to deliver drugs, heat, light, or other substances to specific types of cells, such as cancer cells
reimplication of the tissue
Application of Silver Nanoparticles! Application in HIV/Aids Virus Prevention
Silver nanoparticles of certain sizes can attach to the HIV-1 virus and prevent it from bonding to host cells.
could be a new treatment for the virus
big step in possibly preventing and making the HIV-1 virus extinct in future medicine and society (diagnostic applications)
Antibacterial Applications
Silver nanoparticles are included in wound dressings for their antibacterial properties to help fight off infection.
Diagnostic Applications
Silver nanoparticles are used in biosensors and numerous assays where the silver nanoparticle materials can be used as biological tags for quantitative detection.
Drawback of Silver Nanoparticles!
Although Silver nanoparticles are helpful in fighting off infection, there are some drawbacks. For instance, Silver nanoparticles kill benefical bacteria in the water which affects the environment in a negative way.
